Sweaters
Over the years, at different times, I have explored the theme of motherhood. Many of these explorations have centred around sweaters made of unwearable materials – concrete, glass, wax, matted dog hair. The sweaters speak to expectations and disappointments I’ve felt in my relationship with my mother and as a mother myself. They also reflect some thoughts on the complexities of nurturance. More recently, I have taken a lighter look at motherhood and created a more benign and softer representation of this most basic and universal of human relationships. In that work, Thanks, Ma, the knitting most closely resembles something that might be worn, although it still cannot. (Thanks, Ma is a life-sized kinetic sculptural puppet.
